About Us
The Japanese Media Appreciation Club (JMAC) started in the fall of 2002 and we are entering our third year as a DePaul organization with an ever-growing community of Japanese culture-loving students. Currently, we have around 30 regularly attending members. We are always open to new members and guests, who may just wish to stop by once in a while.
The community we are building at DePaul is laidback, friendly and supportive; our members are friendly and network beyond the setting of club meetings. Our members are a diverse bunch; we have members from all over the country, in different majors, and from all years. Though, we all find common ground with our interests in Japan.
While our members love everything Japanese, our focus is Japan’s media. Our primary purpose is to create a friendly, supportive environment for people to come together and watch anime. However, we do not limit ourselves; we also show live-action and dabble in music, games and manga. Our meetings are spent enjoying Japanese media while taking a short break from the academic world.
We do also enjoy getting some fresh air every once in awhile. JMAC has taken trips to Mitsuwa (the Japanese grocery store and emporium in Chicago’s suburbs) and last winter went ice-skating (which is in the works for this winter as well). Many of our members go to films together, such as Steamboy. Many of our members even attend ACEN together! We are always searching for other activities to do off campus; whether they are recreational or educational, so long as they are fun our members are up for it.
Along with regular showings and outside trips, JMAC does an anime marathon every quarter. In the past we have watched full series (13 or 26 episodes in length), watched movies, done a lot of gaming and had parties. So far these have been very successful and we enjoy doing them. We also love guests to stop by for these as well!
JMAC is always experimenting with what we show and our outside trips. We are looking to do more Japanese related activities (and non-related) around DePaul and Chicago. We are looking into diversifying our media and into planning more club sponsored days like our marathon and more fundraisers.
JMAC isn’t comprised of nothing but experts on Japanese culture, there are many of us who are still learning or are just dabblers. Even if you’ve never heard of anime or manga stop on by because we are always willing to share our passion with others. JMAC doesn’t like to consider itself formal in any way. We are into anime and Japanese culture for the fun of it. We enjoy what we do and love having new faces around, so feel free to stop by!!
